New For 2008

I've been mia for the past couple of weeks. I have been working behind the scenes (he he) on a new batch of critters. These will be introduced for 2008. I have just today left to get things ready. I still need to do site updates and a couple other little things.

I thought I'd share a quick picture of the new ones to come. Their story will be introduced after the new year.

Happy New Year everyone!!!!

Website Update

OMG, I'm worn out. I finally got my gallery section of my website completed. That means I've got pictures of almost every sculpture I've done since 2002. I had a couple corrupted photos, so there's one or two missing.

I was real careful to put all of them up that I could. Even the ridiculously bad ones. I wanted to show that with perseverance and commitment that you really can advance. I wanted to show that I started with very little skill in sculpting. I came from the "jewelry world" with playtime in sculpting.

I also wanted to have a record of my progress and my whims. It's amazing how much I change what I'm doing, and how I go through kicks. I had my "frog period", my "unicorn period", my "fairy period", etc etc. And the techniques as well, I had a period where I didn't do bases. Then another where I did lots of bases. A period for Mica powders, a period for chalks, a period for colored clay, a period for painting, a period for texturing. Geeez....I'm not sure if I'm versatile or a flake....LOL

If anyone is interested in seeing the complete gallery of my past work, it can be found on my website: www.espiritglen.com

The menu on the left provides access.

Who is everyone??

I know this is going to sound silly, but I don't know who my friends are. I'm realizing that sometimes I think I'm talking to different people, but yet they are the same people. I get so confused.

I know some people through their ebay ID, and then others through their email address, some through group names (and different names on different groups) and then others through my blog. And sometimes I think I'm talking to Sally (a customer), so I treat her a little different than Sally (chit chat friend) and it turns out they are the same person. I'm sooooooooo confused. I don't know who anyone is! LOLOL Not to mention that some screen names are confusing, like PreciousPenelope (made up) is maybe Betty....LOL

I'm 41, and I think it's too early for Alzheimer's to set in, but if I don't get my head straight soon, can you imagine what it'll be like for me in a few years???
I know about a million Debs, (I've never met a Deb I didn't like btw), I know a couple of Annette's....at least I THINK I do unless they're all the same person...lol. There's multiple Janices, and multiple Sheris, Terris, Kims, and there's more.

So here's what I'm going to do....pre-warning....I hope no one gets offended, but I'm going to start asking everyone that I email correspond with to clue me in. :o) And I'm making a cheat sheet until I get my head wrapped around it. And it would be so so so cool if I had pictures of my friends too....but I know that's pushing it. he he

Mom---No Peeking! Chibi Tree update

I'm adding a lot of space to the beginning of this post just in case my Mom comes to visit, so it won't show up without her being able to close it. :o)
Please scroll down.

Well, I finally got the chibi tree earring rack all finished today. And I'm so pleased, I'm sure I must be committing a terrible sin. ;) The tree is made from Aves Epoxie Sculpt, and the little face is polymer clay that I added later.

Below you can see how the leaves come out of the branches. To do these, I had to make the separately, over a wire armature, and then drill holes into the branches and mount them. Aves is a fun and somewhat difficult product to use because it's consistency changes throughout it's work time. When you first mix it up, it's super soft like salt water taffy that you've been fiddling with in warm hands. After about an hour, it's firmer and easier to shape, but it still has a tendency to droop from it's own weight. It is also a very sticky product, and hard to tool unless you wet either the product or the tool. I have to work with wet hands when I use this, and I look like a raisin when I'm finished.

Here's a close up of some of the leaves. Some of them have metal loops that stick out the edges for her to hang her earrings from. Some of the leave have holes where she can hang french hooks or even posts (but I don't think she has any post earrings)

All in all, this has been a really super fun project! And I've learned quite a bit about using the aves in this manner. Which is really cool, cuz I've been afraid of it for so long. Can you imagine that I've had this stuff for almost 6 years????

Well that's it for now.

Chibitude level: 10/10 - Because I learned a new product, tried a new technique, made an item I'd never attempted before, My mom's gonna love this and He's so goofy he's CUTE! YAY

Guess what I did today?!?!?

Or maybe I should say "Guess what I DIDN'T do??" I didn't cut my finger off, that's what....LOL Today Mac taught me how to use the jig-saw. YAY! And I made all these bases myself. Just freehand cutting, and it was really fun. Plus I felt all powerful and stuff with that tool in me hand. Look out Bob Villa, here's come Maddy with electric tools!!!

(Mom, don't look) Chibi House Update and New Chibi Tree

Here's the progress on my chibi house. I still have to finish the base around the edges as you can see it's raw wood. My hubby's amazing! I made the base part out of card stock, and textured, painted and everythinged it. Then when I was done, I went to him and said, "hey, this is curled, what should I do?" He's like, "trace it on here" and gives me a big sheet of plywood. He pulls out his jig saw and cut it out. I was so amazed, he did it as easily as I cut a piece of cardboard....LOL

Anyhoo, it's pretty neat how this goes together, the house actually sits down inside the base, that way you can pick up the house, and see the area where the 2 rooms are. There's nothing in the rooms, but if you had a sleepy chibi, that'd be a perfect place for him....except for the chibis partying on the rooftops....hmmmm maybe it wouldn't be such a great place to get some rest.

I've also started working on another tree.

I'm learning to use the aves products, and it's kind of exciting. I've had them forever and used them for armatures, but have always been afraid to actually use use them. But I'm being braver lately and trying things I hadn't done before, and I'm so glad. I've found for me the best way to be creative is to change something.....be it what I'm sculpting with, the way I'm sculpting something, the way I color it, different materials whatever. Because each new thing I try, I make new little mistakes which we all know, mistakes are really just the starting block for new ideas.

I'm happy today, feeling pretty up, and everything, so....

Here's an updated pic of my newest Chibi Tree. I'm tired and ready for bed, so I will work on him tomorrow. He's to be for my mom's birthday. Mom, if you're reading this, well, you were warned not to peek....LOL She has tons of jewelry that she keeps on her coffee table. And I wanted to make her something cool that she could hang her stuff on. If all goes as planned that's what this little tree will turn out to be. Anyone know where I can get teenie tiny weenie schmeenie dinky wittle eye hooks? I'd like to put them all along the branches so she can hang her earrings on them. I'll look tomorrow and see what I can find.

Still in a good mood and a full 10 in Chibitude.

Chibi House

This is what I've been working on the past couple of days. A cute little chibi house for a group of chibi friends. I'm just getting ready to start adding details and texturing it. After making the tree, I felt all excited to try something else that was different.

Man, I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to make things that I don't feel as willing to sell at a $.99 starting price. I've been told that it's almost impossible to ask for higher prices when you've been selling this way for so long. I honestly just never thought that I'd go so far with the chibis. I really didn't know how detailed and advanced they'd become. When I first started making them they were out of sculpey III colors, with little black eyes, and not much detail at all. Now I find that I'm mixing clays, making my own colors, adding accessories, bases, painting, texturing, painting eyes, designing and creating wings, applying all kind of mixed techniques for each one, fingernails, toes and fingers......my Gosh, things have really changed!

Chibi Tree

This is what I've been playing with this week. I'm not exactly sure where I'm going with it, but I'm having fun anyways.

Chibitude level: 7/10 (because I'm a little lost)

Here's an updated photo. I've made the cherry blossoms, and still need to actually attach them.

One more update for today. I've worked on the base, and added the blossoms. As you can see the blossoms have changed color. That's because they're covered with Kato Liquid, and it yellowed in the heat, but I'm quite happy with peach blossoms, so I'm not complaining. I still need to do much work. The base is still stark, needs some greenery and maybe some flowers.

I'm thinking of making tiny ornaments and garland that I can offer with this auction, so that the new owner can decorate the tree for Christmas. I think that would be really nice.

Okies....off to bed now.

Chibitude level: 8/10 (because I know where I'm going now)

Thought I should post the final tree picture. It took me so long to finish because I started feeling inadequate again. My friend Sheri was just the ticket to get me going again and finish this. And now that it is done, I actually feel kind of proud of it.

Chibi Party!

I don't often get to play with my chibis because they go to new homes within a week of my making them......but lately, I'm finding it harder to part with them. I'm starting to have my own little chibi collection. I thought I'd take a couple pics of the ones sitting here keeping me company on my desk. The purple one on the little hill is going to a new home at the end of the week as well as the little blue on hiding in the cave, but I thought as long as they're here, they should have time to play with the other little ones.

I think tomorrow, I may just have to take a good hard look and see just how many of these little ones I've kept for myself. Maybe I'll post more pictures tomorrow.

Aaaaaaah!

I'm pooped!! And it took me all day and it doesn't look THAT much better! But it is somewhat, and now I feel like sculpting, but hubby will be home in 20 minutes so I'm out of time. Guess I'll just chalk this day up under the title of "necessary maintenance" ;o)

Chibitude level: 8:10 (since I can't sculpt)

This is Why I can't Sculpt!!!

I've let myself get toooooo messy. And now I'm feeling all cluttered inside my head as well as on my desk. So today I'm cleaning this mess and getting organized again so that I can sculpt with a clear head. Of course, you see I'm posting on my blog instead of cleaning....hmmmm, me thinks me is procrastinating....LOL

Seriously though, when things get cluttered around me, it makes me lazy. It makes me feel like "what's the use", and that's not good. I bet this applies to others too, that they feel like they can't work because they've got too much stuff in eyesight. And that's all I'll do, put things in containers, so that I'm not staring at it directly, and then I'll feel like it's clean, even if inside the containers it's a mess. ;)

Kato Clay Crack Update

I am posting a follow up to my Beheading a Chibi post as well as my Kato Clay Crack Test post.
This is the head that I wacked off. If this concerns you chibi lovers, please watch the video to see that no harm has come to the chibi. As you can see, this head had quite a few cracks and moonies as well. This head was a mix of 5 parts Kato Translucent and 1 part Fimo Quick mix. It was baked for 15 minutes at 300 degrees.

This is the new head that I made. As you can see, there are no moonies nor are there any cracks. The mix was exactly the same (5 parts Kato Translucent and 1 part Fimo Quick Mix) and the baking time was the same (15 minutes at 300 degrees). The difference between the two is that this one was baked over an epoxy ball, with the clay not being thicker than 1 quarter of an inch in any areas.

When I had started working on this chibi, and then beheaded it yesterday, I was noticing that none of the imperfections ever appeared in on the body. It was always on the head. And in comparing the way the two were sculpted, the only difference was that the head was thicker. Much Thicker.

The epoxy that I used was plain old everyday 2 part blue and white plumbers epoxy. I couldn't find the kind I use online, but I just go across the street to Ace Hardware and buy their brand. I also like the Aves Fix-it if I have the patience to wait, as it has a slower curing time and isn't as sticky. I'm pretty impatient though. Don't like to wait. Gimme fast glue, fast epoxy, fast clay, fast paint, fast glaze and I'm a happy sculptor. ;)

Oh, and I've also in the past tried to use foil to bulk out the centers of my stuff, but I find that if I make a tiny ooboo and don't get all the air quinked out that it can cause the clay to crack. So I'm a no foil kind of gal.

Coool Toool!

Sometimes I just get all tickled with me-self when I come up with a silly little idea that works so well...LOL

Well, today's one of those days. Here's a picture of my new Coool Toool.

The reason why it's cool to me, is that I do a lot of bases for my stuff, and like to roughen up the texture for either grass, stone or rock. So I took one of those cheap brushes that have tan bristles....you know, the REALLY cheap brushes that the bristles fall out of, and feel like they're made of corn husk or something....LOL. I cut it pretty short and then fliggered out the bristles, then dipped it into my Kato liquid clay, and then dipped it into my sand and baked. And now I've got a nice little texture brush to use on my next base. YAY!!

Glaze and superglue tips

What to glazes and superglue have in common?

They both tend to dry out easily and the caps get stuck.

It's most important that after each use you wipe off the rims of your glaze jars, and the applicator tips of your superglue. This will extend the use of your products by double.

Also, do not leave items sitting open. Not even for a tiny bit. I save old bottlecaps, and use them to cover open bottles and jars. Most glazes won't dry out from sitting open for a couple of minutes, but each time they're open, they dry up just a little bit. If you notice your glazes getting thicker over time, this may very well be the culprit.

Sculpey glazes can have a little water added if they get too thick. I do this often.

For special mixes of your own, I recommend these little paint pots to store them. They're not easy to find, and if I come up with good source, I'll share it here. If you find some of your own, make sure they are the solid plastic. The ones that are floppy, don't hold up well. These ones I bought from Karen at www.clayalley.com but I purchased the rest that she had. I'm sorry, not trying to be greedy, she just only had 3 strips left.

I've tried lots of other little containers for my special mixes, but they've each had their own problems. For some time I used contact lens cases, but they weren't air tight and my mixes tended to dry out. Then I purchased glass bottles from Micro-Mark, but those had paper liners which would get stuck to the lids and eventually cause problems.

Thanks for reading. Have a great day.

11/02/07 Update: I was contacted by a fellow artist (very talented, please check out her work via the link below) who says that she's been using little pots like these for some time, and that she too has had wonderful success with them. She gets hers at Hobby Lobby, and she also mentioned that round garage sale stickers make super labels for these little pots.

Thank you Jeanette!!! (JRB Creations - ebay id Jeanette601 )

Chibitude in hiding!!

Those of you who know me personally know that I have these phases that I go through. Little cycles of ups and downs. They're manageable, I'm aware of them, and know that all I have to do is wait it out, and it too shall pass...lol.

The past couple of weeks, I've been in one of my cycles, but not the usual up and down one. This is a larger one that comes about once a year or so. This one is where I feel the need to pull back and spend some time outside of all the groups, and numerous personalities (wonderful though they may be) and simplify. Although this particular cycles seems like it's bad, it's really not. This is when I start really working on my craft, and heading for new plateaus.

I find that if I'm getting bored with my "me-ness" that the best thing for me to do is to reinvent myself. If I hang out with other artist's at this time, it makes it difficult to find myself. I'm a strong believer in the adage that one must take care of themselves before they can be of any good to others.

Thanks for reading. xoxo Maddy

Cloth Covered Floral Wire (CCFW)

Well, actually I think it's more like thread covered floral wire. The reason I thought I'd add a post today, is because I was working on a special project, and started thinking how versatile my wire is.

I always get the CCFW in white. And I have a few thicknesses, 24 ga. 26 ga. and 20 ga. The reason for always buying white, is that because it is covered with thread it is so easy to change the color. Why have a million colors taking up space, when I only need one.

Another reason I love the CCFW is because if I need some plain wire, all I need to do is roll the threads off part of the end and cut what I need.

The CCFW also holds glue, TLS, and other liquids much better than raw wire. I use it for my wing armatures, as well as the armatures for my sculptures.

I've used CCFW to make this crown, painted with acrylic paints and micro beads added. That wouldn't have been as easy with raw wire, because it's smooth the paint tends to chip off as well as the wire doesn't have the tooth to really grab the glue.

Here's another CCFW painted purple, and then wrapped in black and silver thread. I really like the versatility.
That's all for now, my project pieces have dried and it's time to get back to work. :o)

Just General Catching Up.

Well, it's been a little bit since I've updated my blog. I've been working on things, little experiments here and there as well as made some changes to my website.

I've ordered a few new supplies that I wanted to share that I really like.

I ordered Donna Kato's squeeze bottle with precision tips, and I am very fond of how it works. I like the fact that I can load it up with my liquid clay, and it has a nice tip and cap, so when I need to use it it's very convenient. I do plan on buying a few more of these for my special mixes.
I like to order most of my supplies through Karen at Clay Alley. She's a very nice and honest person and will do whatever she needs to to make her customers satisfied.

You can see the squeeze bottle that I bought here. It's almost half way down on the page.

I also purchased more more more of the sculpey ultra light. Man I really use the heck out of this stuff. It's just so nice to have a clay that has a consistency that is completely different than the other clays. I got mine here.

I made a base out of the sculpey ultra light with a little tree stump on it. After it was completed, I decided that I wanted to do it differently. So I thought, I'd just pop the tree stump off, and start again. But it didn't work that way. The sculpey ultra light is very flexible, and almost stretchy. As I tried to pull, the clay gave but didn't separate. I had to pull out my craft knife and literally saw the piece off the base.

I do a lot of deconstruction of my sculptures, and I'm glad, because I've learned a lot about what materials work for which things, and their different strengths and properties after baking.

I also purchased these animal print Roylco Rubbing texture plates. They are not as expected. The prints are much larger than I had anticipated, and the plates are larger than the opening in my pasta machine. I do not consider this a wasted purchase though because I will find many uses for them, I'm sure. But for what I had planned they will not work.

I also bought some tiny little paint pots but I will not bother with the link, because I guess I bought up the last of them. But I do like them. They are the kind that you get with a paint by numbers set. I've tried all kinds of little jars and containers to hold my glazes and liquid clay mixes, but each have had their own little problems. So far these pots seems to be doing quite well. I put some Halo Glaz in them, and it has not dried out. I guess time will tell if these are going to be in my arsenal for the long haul or not.

I've also added a few more product instructions to my website. I like to scan the packaging when I buy something new so that I can throw it away. I am swallowed by paper as it is...LOL

That's all of the updates for now. I have also purchase a couple other products which I will share my opinions and where to get them in a future post.

Kato Clay Crack Tests

::note:: please see the update for the final results of my testing.

Today I'm starting some tests on Kato clay. It has a tendency to get little cracks, which close when cooled. I look at them as Kato's version of moonies, because I've yet to see a true moonie in Kato.

I will keep updating this same post so that all the results are on the same page.

Test #1:
All spheres are approximately 3/4" in size.
All spheres were baked by putting into a cold oven set at 300 degrees F
All spheres were baked for 20 minutes and removed immediately from the oven.
All spheres were cooled under cool water directly after removing from the hot oven.

Sample 1 results:

Sample 2 results:

Sample 3 results:

Sample 4 results:

Test #2:
see images for details
Sample 5 results

Sample 6 Results:

NOTE TO SELF: I have noticed that clay that is more thoroughly conditioned does not seem to get the large open gaping cracks in it. The smaller cracks are not actually open when the item is removed from the oven like the larger cracks were. The conditioning at a lower (thinner) setting of the pasta machine also appears to do a more complete job. I'm of the conclusion thus far that these cracks may appear in translucent as a plaque like the moonies are to other clays.

My next series of tests, I'm going to attempt to duplicate these tests, but baking at 275 for 30 minutes for each piece (that's 10 minutes preheat time and 20 baking time). If the results again turn out the same, I will begin experimenting with mixing small amounts of color into the clay.

Why I love Kato Clay

Kato is my favorite clay, and I made this little video to show why.
It's so flexible and strong, and even though you can tell people with words, it's just not the same as seeing it with your own eyes. This is a cured piece of Kato that is 1/8" thick.

Chibis as collectibles

I don't want my stuff to be toys. I make them for adults. I would like them to be collectibles. I don't know, I know there might be money in it, but it's the love that makes me want to do it. I'm afraid that if I tried to get them marketed as toys they'd take my love away and turn it into something profane, cheap little plastic things produced in china's sweat shops or something.

If I could have them produced in the manner of Hummels, or Precious Moments, or something like that, that would interest me.

I want chibis to make adults remember childhood.

I don't understand why feeling happy and innocent and carefree is considered a childish feeling. I don't understand why our world has turned in such a way that children are the only ones associated with such joy. I'm just one person, and can't change this, but I can maybe do a small part in my small circle of the world to remind people that joy isn't just for kids. It's for us all....

Jumbo Chibis

For the past few days I've been working on some jumbo chibis. I'd been thinking in the back of my melon about trying larger chibis, but didn't and still don't know if people will like them. But I did two of them so far, and am kind of enjoying them. They are very big. They feel like what a real dragon baby would feel like if you found one that just was born and you picked it up.

This one is mine for the keeping. He was my first, and I love him so much that I could never part with him. I haven't named him yet.....I'm waiting to see how he acts before I do.

This is my second Jumbo. I've yet to name him either. I haven't listed any Jumbos yet. I'm still working out some things in my head, like about how much clay this uses. I could have made at lease 6 chibis out of the clay that I used to make this guy.

I'm considering how I'll pack them, how much to ask for shipping, and what to start them out at. I just really don't know if my collectors will like these jumbos. My hub says that he thinks they'll do better than the little ones. To be honest, I enjoy sculpting smaller better than large, but at the same time, I just adore holding these Jumbos in my hands. It feels like they're real to me. You can cuddle them!!!

Adult Gronky Chibi

Chibi Greetings!
I've listed my first Adult Chibi Dragon.
His name is Marzipan L. Furrowbrow.
Don't expect to see too many gronky chibis from me.
I found that while I was sculpting this little dude,
my eyebrows were knitted and my eyes squinted.
He made me feel grumpy! And that goes to show,
the people you hang out with definitely have an
affect on how you feel.

Experimenting

Today, I'm trying to make wings for some new sculptures that I've been baking (in my melon). They are dragons with dragonfly wings. I wanted to try and make them with Kato liquid and wire for the veins. Nothing too elaborate, but different for me.

So I went to the store, got some wire, and a small picture frame (for the glass) and came home to get started. I don't know if this is going to work. I tried to super glue the wires together at the points where I want them to meet. I know that super glue isn't supposed to hold up to heat, and I'm kind of counting on that, because I glued the wires right to the glass. Not big long lines of glue, but tiny little pin pricks of it. Then filled it in with the Kato.

Well, it's in the oven now (only did one wing just in case) and am eager to see if the glue released itself. I hope it did, but also fear that it will have turned white, and left a residue in the liquid clay. I'll post results as they come in......stay tuned. LOL

Ok, the glass is out of the oven and there are no white spots where the glue was applied. The wing is as clear as the glass it was baked on. It's still attached, because the glass is very HOT HOT HOT. But so far the wing looks very pretty! I hope I can peel it off of the glass.

more to come.

WHOOO HOOOO!
It worked it worked it worked!!!! Just as I predicted, the super glue let loose from the heat of the oven!!!! I'm so super excited (can you tell?)
